“Dichotomies”: New exhibition at Pirámides de Güímar by
artist Javier Martín Batista
The Ethnographic Park Pirámides de Güímar hosts since the 19th of March a photographic exhibition by
Canarian artist Javier Martín Batista under the title “Dichotomies”. Fine Arts graduate Javier Martín has
won the 1st prize in the “I Certamen de Música de la Universidad de La Laguna 2005”, 1st Prize in the
“Contest of Youth, Music and Culture of the Canary Government 2006” and 1st Prize at the “VII Contest
of Young Island Artists of the Cabildo de Tenerife”, Artistic Photography, 2006.
‘Dichotomies’ consists of double photographs that complement themselves by their content and form, and
make us reflect on the role of man in the world and how certain spaces lose or gain meaning with the
presence or absence of human beings. We know as a single universal rule that the world, or what we
know as our world, moves under the premises of the positive-negative, bad-good, convergencedivergence,
white-black, meaning that everything has its antithesis or complementary value. Thus,
‘Dichotomies’ reflects indeterminate spaces, places that can belong to many or very few sites depending
on what is being represented, but that do not allude to a particular location. Hence they are universal and
timeless spaces, “lonely” places where subjectivity bursts in a determined and concise form.
The exhibition, part of the artistic support programme of Pirámides de Güímar will be housed at the
temporary exhibition room of the Ethnographic Park until the 19th of May.
